Assessments

A thorough assessment provides the foundation for any treatment programme, and often in itself goes a long way to support families by answering questions and giving specific recommendations to enhance function.

Our assessments of infants and children focus on all developmental skills including sensory processing, socio-emotional skills, motor and perceptual development which underlies important functions necessary for participation in play, sport, social – and academic tasks. Our assessments are tailored to the needs of the individual and the families that we work with.

Our assessments of adults focus on emotional regulation and sensory processing skills to support and improve participation in daily life activities such as self-care, work, relationships and leisure.

Individual therapy sessions

We believe in addressing the cause of developmental problems by treating the underlying sensory systems, and the integration thereof. Our therapy is child-led and we welcome caregivers in our sessions as we enable them to support their children. We are skilled in the use of a number of treatment approaches including Ayres© Sensory Integration and elements of DIR© Floortime. We are aware that not all treatment principles are neuro-affirming and therefore we choose to be guided by the voices of the neuro-diverse population to ensure we deliver neuro-affirmative care.

We also offer supportive auditory therapies and programmes to assist in the integration of sensory systems to ensure better carry over.

Our practice is attachment and trauma informed, and we utilize various treatment modalities to best support the families we see.

Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is a specialized technique used by occupational therapists as a treatment modality where the child is treated on a horse.

The three-dimensional movement of the horse mimics human walking, and improves muscle tone, mobility, coordination and muscle strength. The concussive force of the horse provides sensory feedback that improves regulation, communication and concentration. Activities done while on horse-back furthers fine motor skills, eye movements, planning and perceptual skills. It also promotes emotional regulation, self-esteem and confidence.

Spell to Communicate (S2C)

Communication is a basic human right. Spell to Communicate (S2C) is a method that enables non-speaking or unreliably speaking individuals to communicate their thoughts and needs, through the use of letterboards and/or typing. Through the use of this method, brain pathways between the language and motor systems of the brain is built and myelinated, and as motor planning improves this communication method becomes quick and accurate. S2C aims to improve our speller’s agency through giving them a voice to become autonomous, and to have access to various educational, vocational and social opportunities. If someone can’t speak – it does not mean they cannot communicate.
